Prevent Periodontal Disease with a Complimentary Screening
Recent research has shown that the health consequences of gum disease are perhaps much more serious than previously believed. Certain strains of bacteria found in neglected gum tissue have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, diabetes, and even adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Gingivitis is the onset of periodontal disease in its mildest form. Most people learn from their dentist at a young age what gingivitis is and how to know if they have it: Gums that are slightly red, swollen, or bloody are often an indicator of inadequate oral hygiene and gingivitis. Improved oral hygiene along with periodontal treatments can usually reverse gingivitis before it creates greater problems.
Periodontitis is what occurs when gingivitis becomes more serious. Bacteria in plaque cause the gums surrounding the affected teeth to become inflamed. These bacteria create pockets where more bacteria can grow, and deeper pockets lead to further destruction of gum and bone tissue. Although periodontal disease is usually avoidable with proper brushing and flossing, at later stages it may be impossible to avoid losing teeth. Worse yet, the pockets of bacteria that form have the potential to house more harmful strains that are related to coronary disease.
The best method of treating periodontal disease is to prevent it from reaching the point where it becomes difficult to control.
